Mercedes-Benz has consistently been at the forefront of innovation in the automotive world, though it has been a couple of years since fresh product arrived on Irish shores. Now, that is all about to change with the arrival of the all-new third-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA, a model that continues the brand’s tradition of blending quality design, advanced tech and an increasingly strong push towards electrification! We first saw the new CLA make its static debut at the Nevo EV Show late last year, where it immediately stood out for its impressive proportions and modern styling. This week, however, we finally got behind the wheel for a brief drive along the South Dublin coastline, taking in the scenic routes around Dún Laoghaire and Sandycove before finishing back at the flagship Mercedes-Benz dealership in South Dublin.

First impressions are very positive. The new CLA looks fantastic in the metal, particularly in AMG Line trim, which adds a sharper, more aggressive edge to its already sleek silhouette. It is noticeably larger than before in every dimension, giving it a more planted stance and improved interior space. The design retains familiar Mercedes-Benz cues, including the distinctive star-pattern grille, frameless doors and sculpted “shark nose” front end, all of which contribute to a more premium and modern appearance. On the road, the CLA feels composed and refined, even on a relatively short test drive. While a full judgement will have to wait until we spend more time with the car, the early signs are encouraging. What stood out most was the level of technology on offer. The latest MBUX infotainment system dominates the cabin, with crisp displays and intuitive functionality, while features such as wireless charging, multiple USB ports and optional passenger display highlight the car’s focus on connectivity.

The interior itself feels like a big step forward with more space, particularly for rear passengers, and the overall finish leans heavily into the luxury side of the Mercedes-Benz brand. A panoramic roof, featured on our test car, adds to the sense of openness, while the seating is both comfortable and supportive. It is clear that Mercedes is aiming to elevate the CLA beyond its previous positioning and bring it closer in line with its larger siblings. Under the bonnet, the new CLA offers a broad choice of powertrains. Buyers can opt for mild hybrid petrol versions or fully electric models, marking a significant shift for the nameplate. The mild hybrid range, powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine supported by a 48-volt system, delivers outputs from 156hp to 211hp, with the option of 4MATIC all-wheel drive on selected variants. Efficiency is also a key focus, with fuel consumption figures as low as 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres in some versions.

However, we believe it is the electric CLA that is likely to generate the most attention. Available in multiple versions, it offers impressive efficiency and a standout WLTP range of up to 793 kilometres in the CLA 250+. That figure alone puts it among the most capable electric cars in its class. The introduction of an 800-volt architecture also means rapid charging is a strong point, with up to 325 kilometres of range added in under ten minutes under the right conditions. Interestingly, pricing is another area where the CLA challenges expectations. There is still a perception among many Irish buyers that electric vehicles are more expensive than their petrol counterparts, but in this case that is not necessarily true. Once government grants are applied, the electric CLA can actually comes in at the lower entry price of €53,425 over the the petrol version entry of €57,960, making it a compelling option for those considering the switch to EV.

Practicality has also been considered. The boot offers 405 litres of space, while electric models benefit from an additional 101-litre front trunk, a first for a modern Mercedes-Benz. Safety remains a priority too, with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems and airbags, including a central airbag between the front occupants. Looking ahead, the CLA range will expand further with the arrival of the good-looking Shooting Brake estate version in both petrol and electric forms, offering even greater versatility. Overall, the new Mercedes-Benz CLA feels like a significant step forward for the brand. It combines the design flair that has always defined the model with a new level of technology and efficiency. Our short drive along the Dublin coast has left a strong first impression, but a longer test will be needed to fully assess its capabilities. For now, it is clear that Mercedes-Benz has created a car that not only looks the part, but also positions itself firmly at the forefront of the next generation of premium compact vehicles!
