The all-new smart #2 is entering the final stages of development ahead of its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show this October, with engineers putting the compact electric city car through an intensive global testing programme. Prototype vehicles are currently undergoing validation in a distinctive black-and-white camouflage wrap created by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team as smart fine-tunes the next generation of its iconic two-seater. The testing programme focuses on ensuring the #2 delivers the agility and manoeuvrability expected of a modern city car. Engineers have been evaluating its performance through a variety of urban driving scenarios, including emergency lane changes, obstacle avoidance and low-grip wet road conditions. Continuous refinement of the steering, chassis and suspension aims to deliver responsive handling while maintaining a comfortable ride.
Cabin refinement has also been a major priority. Extensive testing has been carried out to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), with the #2 undergoing evaluation in wind tunnels, acoustic chambers, climate-controlled facilities, proving grounds and on public roads. Engineers have worked to minimise wind and road noise while optimising overall cabin comfort. Tyre development has also played an important role, with multiple compounds tested across a range of surfaces to strike the ideal balance between low rolling resistance for maximum driving range and reduced cabin noise. Long-term durability has been assessed through thousands of kilometres over rough roads, potholes and continuous undulations, helping ensure the #2 is built to withstand the demands of everyday urban driving.
Safety has also been a key focus. The new model features the latest evolution of smart’s trademark tridion safety cell, combining a compact footprint with a robust body structure designed to deliver high levels of occupant protection and structural rigidity. Remaining true to the original smart fortwo formula, the all-electric #2 adopts a wheels-at-the-corners layout to maximise interior space while delivering exceptional manoeuvrability in tight city streets. The production version of the smart #2 will make its official world debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026, where full technical specifications and pricing are expected to be revealed.
