Renault is preparing to add a fresh dose of fun and nostalgia to the electric car market with the introduction of the Renault 4 E-Tech electric Plein Sud, a soft-top version of its reborn R4 that revives the spirit of some of the most memorable variants of the original model. Inspired by iconic open-air Renault 4 models such as the minimalist Plein Air and the double sunroof-equipped Sixties, the new Plein Sud aims to deliver a more emotional driving experience without sacrificing the practicality that has made the modern Renault 4 E-Tech electric such an appealing proposition. One of the key features of this new model is a large electrically operated canvas roof measuring 92cm long and 80cm wide, creating almost one square metre of open space. Renault claims it offers the largest opening of any vehicle in the A and B segments, allowing both front and rear passengers to enjoy the sensation of open-top motoring. The roof can be opened or closed in around 10 seconds and can even be operated at speeds of up to 90km/h, either via a button mounted in the roof console or through voice commands using Renault’s AI-powered Reno assistant.

Importantly, the Plein Sud retains all of the key attributes of the standard Renault 4 E-Tech electric. Overall length remains unchanged at 4.14 metres, while the distinctive styling, illuminated front grille and signature design cues inspired by the classic Renault 4 are all carried over. The only visual differences are the black fabric roof and the absence of roof rails, which have been omitted to accommodate the opening mechanism. Practicality remains a strong point also. Despite the addition of the soft-top roof, the Plein Sud still offers seating for five, a 420-litre boot and an exceptionally low loading sill that makes loading bulky items easier. The rear seats fold flat, while the front passenger seat can also be folded to create a load length of up to 2.2 metres. Towing capability is unaffected too, with the car retaining its 750kg towing capacity, making it suitable for pulling a small trailer or caravan.

Engineers have worked to ensure the new roof has minimal impact on weight and efficiency. Thanks to lightweight polymer components, the Plein Sud weighs just 19kg more than the fixed-roof version. Aerodynamic efficiency has also been carefully managed, resulting in only a marginal reduction in range. Models equipped with the larger battery and Techno trim are expected to offer up to 392km of WLTP driving range, just 7km less than the equivalent hardtop model. Interior space is also largely unchanged, with Renault paying particular attention to maintaining passenger comfort and luggage capacity. In fact, front seat occupants gain additional headroom, while only a slight reduction is experienced by those in the rear. Beyond the new roof, all of the technology and features found in the standard Renault 4 E-Tech electric remain intact. Passengers benefit from a spacious cabin, 23.3 litres of storage space and a versatile interior designed to cope with everyday life as easily as weekend adventures.

Available to order now in Ireland, the Renault 4 E-Tech electric Plein Sud is priced from €34,495 for the Techno version and €36,495 for the range-topping Iconic model, with both prices including applicable SEAI grants. With demand growing for compact electric SUVs that offer more than simply rational transport, the Renault 4 E-Tech electric Plein Sud could prove to be one of the more characterful additions to the segment. Combining the charm and freedom of open-top motoring with the versatility and efficiency of a modern electric vehicle, it demonstrates that even in the age of electrification, driving enjoyment remains very much alive.
