Volvo Cars has began production of the new, fully electric Volvo EX60, with first customer deliveries set to begin in early summer. The fully electric mid-size SUV is being built at Volvo Cars’ manufacturing plant in Torslanda, just outside the company’s headquarters in Gothenburg. Following strong early demand, Volvo Cars announced last month that it will increase EX60 production volumes for 2026.

As the first fully electric car to be designed, developed and built in Sweden, the EX60 underlines Volvo Cars’ long-term commitment to its home market as a centre for premium electric vehicle development and manufacturing. The EX60 is also expected to provide a significant boost to both the Gothenburg region and the wider Swedish economy. With Volvo Cars’ future volume ambitions, it is set to become one of Sweden’s most valuable export products. In doing so, it supports economic growth while reinforcing Western Sweden’s position as a leading automotive development and manufacturing hub.

“Today is an important milestone for our company and for Sweden as a whole, as we start to build the first EX60 customer cars,” said Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars. “We are now focused on a steady ramp-up of high-quality EX60 production, ensuring this game-changing car becomes a profitable growth driver in the years ahead.”

The decision to raise 2026 production followed strong initial demand in key markets including Sweden and Germany, with retail orders exceeding internal forecasts across nearly all major European markets. With order books for the United States and Asian markets opening later this spring, Volvo Cars has committed to building more EX60 models in 2026. The company also aims to keep the Torslanda plant open for an additional week this summer which, is a first in its history!

Unveiled to widespread acclaim in January, the EX60 has been positioned as a major step forward for both Volvo Cars and its customers. It offers a class-leading driving range of up to 810km, can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 16 minutes, and is priced in line with the company’s best-selling Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid. The Torslanda plant has undergone extensive upgrades in recent years to prepare for production of the EX60 and future-generation electric vehicles. As part of an investment of around SEK 10 billion, Volvo Cars has introduced mega-casting capabilities, a new battery assembly plant, and fully modernised paint and final assembly facilities.
