Opel has unveiled plans for a significant new addition to its future model strategy, with the development of an all-electric SUV for the highly competitive C-segment. The new model is expected to expand the brand’s existing SUV line-up and could become an important example of global collaboration between Stellantis and Leapmotor as both companies explore a broader partnership.
The upcoming electric SUV is intended to help accelerate Opel’s electrification strategy while also improving development efficiency and scalability. Sales of the new model are currently expected to begin as early as 2028, with the vehicle set to sit alongside Opel’s existing SUV range, including the Grandland, Frontera and Mokka.
“The SUV would be designed and created by us at Opel in Rüsselsheim and developed by international teams located in Germany and China. The partnership with Leapmotor should enable a development time of less than two years. With this, Opel is planning a further important step in the development of state-of-the-art and accessible electric vehicles for our customers,” said Opel CEO Florian Huettl.
The new SUV is expected to combine key elements of Leapmotor’s latest electric vehicle architecture and battery technology with Opel’s own design language, chassis engineering, interior experience, lighting systems and seating technology. Production in Zaragoza, Spain, is currently being evaluated, with the plant potentially building the new model alongside the Opel Corsa. The Zaragoza facility has produced Opel’s long-running B-segment hatchback since 1982 and forms an important part of Stellantis’ European manufacturing network.
“With this project, Opel would bring together German engineering excellence with global technological innovation speed,” said Xavier Chéreau, Chairman of Opel’s Supervisory Board and Stellantis Chief Human Resources & Sustainability Officer. “This innovative spirit defines the next chapter of our global collaboration with Leapmotor and Opel is taking on a pioneering role with this project.”
The proposed collaboration would further strengthen Opel’s position within Stellantis as a key driver of electrification and value-focused mobility. Both parties are currently continuing feasibility studies and pre-development work under existing agreements, while discussions surrounding broader industrial cooperation remain ongoing and subject to final approvals and definitive agreements.
