Few cars carry quite the same reputation for luxury, comfort and technological innovation as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. For decades, the German manufacturer’s flagship saloon has introduced features that eventually find their way into more affordable models, helping shape the direction of the wider automotive industry. Now, Mercedes-Benz has revealed the latest evolution of its luxury flagship, introducing significant advances in digital technology, passenger comfort, safety and powertrain efficiency. With seven different versions available, including petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options, the new S-Class continues to cater for buyers who place refinement and effortless performance above almost everything else.
Seven Powertrain Options Including Plug-in Hybrids
Mercedes-Benz has retained a broad selection of engines for its flagship model, recognising that S-Class customers have different requirements depending on how and where they travel. The petrol range comprises the V8-powered S 580 4MATIC alongside the six-cylinder S 500 4MATIC and S 450 4MATIC. Diesel remains an important part of the offering, with the S 350 d 4MATIC and S 450 d 4MATIC using an updated six-cylinder engine developed with future emissions requirements in mind. For customers seeking greater electric driving capability, the S 580 e 4MATIC and S 450 e 4MATIC plug-in hybrids combine six-cylinder petrol engines with electric assistance, delivering system outputs of 430kW and 320kW respectively. Both offer an electric-only driving range of approximately 100 kilometres, making it possible to complete many everyday journeys without using the combustion engine.
A New Generation of Digital Technology
Perhaps the most significant changes are found beneath the surface, where Mercedes-Benz has introduced its new MB.OS operating system. Built around a powerful central computing architecture, the system brings the vehicle’s various electronic functions together into a single connected platform. Integration with the Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud allows software updates to be delivered remotely, ensuring the car’s digital capabilities can continue to evolve throughout its ownership. Inside, the latest generation of MBUX takes centre stage, with a standard Superscreen display arrangement, enhanced artificial intelligence and an improved Hey Mercedes voice assistant. Navigation also benefits from Google Maps integration, while new driving and parking assistance technologies use an extensive network of sensors to support the driver in a wider range of situations.
Comfort Remains at the Heart of the S-Class
Despite the considerable emphasis on digital technology, the S-Class remains first and foremost a luxury saloon designed to make every journey as comfortable as possible. Standard air suspension is complemented by electronically controlled damping, while rear-axle steering helps make this substantial vehicle easier to manoeuvre through city streets and confined parking areas. The suspension system can also respond intelligently to longer road imperfections, helping maintain the smooth ride quality for which the S-Class has become renowned. Additional comfort features include heated seat belts, electronically controlled air vents and an upgraded air filtration system, all intended to improve the experience for occupants regardless of where they are seated.
Safety continues to be another major priority, with Mercedes-Benz incorporating an extensive range of occupant protection systems. Up to 15 airbags are available, including knee airbags, while advanced seat belt pretensioners and intelligent restraint systems are designed to respond appropriately to different collision scenarios. Patrick Howlett, National Sales Manager at Mercedes-Benz Ireland, describes the latest S-Class as a forerunner in automotive safety, while highlighting its ability to deliver exceptional ride comfort across a wide variety of driving conditions.
A More Distinctive Presence on the Road
Externally, the latest S-Class introduces a more prominent appearance without abandoning the understated elegance traditionally associated with the model. A larger illuminated front grille provides a stronger visual identity, while distinctive twin-star lighting signatures bring a contemporary character to the front end. Buyers looking for something more individual will have considerable scope for personalisation, with more than 150 exterior colours and over 400 interior colour combinations available through the manufacturer’s bespoke offering.
The cabin places particular emphasis on rear-seat accommodation, reflecting the S-Class’s longstanding popularity among business executives and chauffeur-driven customers. Depending on specification, the rear compartment can be equipped with dedicated MBUX controls, integrated video conferencing and a range of features designed to create a comfortable mobile working environment. Equally, passengers can simply enjoy the quiet surroundings and exceptional seating comfort, allowing the S-Class to serve as either a connected workplace or a private retreat.
For Mercedes-Benz, the S-Class remains far more than another model in its range. It continues to act as a showcase for technologies and engineering solutions that could eventually appear in future E-Class and C-Class models. Irish pricing will depend on the selected powertrain, specification and optional equipment, with the new flagship once again targeting customers seeking the highest levels of comfort, sophistication and technological innovation available from the German manufacturer.
