Since its introduction to the Irish market in 2023 by Motor Distributors Limited as “the biggest car brand you’ve never heard of”, BYD has quickly established itself as a serious player. In just a short space of time, the brand has moved into the top five for EV and plug-in hybrid sales in Ireland, supported by a growing network of 14 dealerships nationwide. Continuing that momentum, BYD is expanding its range with the arrival of the new Sealion 5 Super Hybrid. This marks the eighth model the brand has launched in Ireland in just three years and further strengthens its position in the increasingly competitive electrified SUV market.

The Sealion 5 is a mid-sized family SUV powered by BYD’s Super DM hybrid technology, bringing the number of Super Hybrid models available in Ireland to three. According to BYD Ireland’s National Sales Manager, Vicky Reilly, these models have proven extremely popular with customers since their introduction, with strong demand across the range. At the heart of the Sealion 5 is a system designed to prioritise electric driving as much as possible. Using BYD’s proprietary dual-mode technology, the car can operate as a pure electric vehicle when the battery is fully charged. As the battery level drops, it seamlessly transitions into a highly efficient hybrid, with a 1.5 litre petrol engine generating power to support the system. The result is a smooth, quiet driving experience combined with low fuel consumption and strong overall efficiency.

Two trim levels are available, Comfort and Design, both aimed at delivering a practical and flexible solution for everyday use as well as longer journeys. Pricing is competitive, starting from €36,990 for the Comfort model and €40,990 for the higher specification Design version. Both variants share a total system output of 212 horsepower, but differ in battery capacity and electric range. The Comfort model is equipped with a 12.96 kWh battery, offering up to 62 kilometres of electric driving and a combined range of up to 992 kilometres. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in 7.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 170 kilometres per hour.

The Design version features a larger 18.3 kWh battery, increasing electric range to 85 kilometres and extending the combined range to 1,016 kilometres. Acceleration is slightly more relaxed at 8.1 seconds to 100 kilometres per hour, with the same top speed. Efficiency is a key selling point, with WLTP-rated fuel consumption figures ranging from 2.1 to 2.7 litres per 100 kilometres, helping to keep running costs low while maintaining the flexibility of a long-range vehicle.

Standard equipment is generous across the range. The Comfort model includes metallic paint, 18 inch alloy wheels, aluminium roof rails and full LED lighting. Inside, there is an 8.8 inch digital instrument display and a 12.8 inch infotainment screen, along with electrically adjustable front seats, USB charging points front and rear, and rear parking sensors. Technology is a strong focus, with features such as NFC key access allowing the car to be unlocked and started using a smartphone. Vehicle-to-Load capability is also included as standard, enabling external devices such as small appliances or camping equipment to be powered directly from the car.

The Design model builds on this with additional convenience and comfort features, including front parking sensors, a 360 degree camera system, an electric tailgate, heated front seats and wireless phone charging. In terms of size, the Sealion 5 offers the space expected of a family SUV. Measuring just under 4.74 metres in length, it provides a roomy interior with ample headroom and legroom for five adults. Boot capacity stands at 463 litres, expanding to 1,410 litres with the rear seats folded, with a flat load floor making it easier to carry larger items.

Styling is clean and modern, with a wide stance emphasised by a textured front grille and lower bumper design. Strong shoulder lines over the wheel arches add a sense of presence, while the rear features a full-width light bar and a subtle roof spoiler, complemented by a contrasting pillar design that creates a floating roof effect. Safety and driver assistance are well covered, with seven airbags and a comprehensive suite of systems designed to support the driver in a variety of conditions. Features such as voice control, smartphone integration and advanced driver aids come as standard, reinforcing the car’s focus on usability and convenience.

The Sealion 5 Super Hybrid also benefits from BYD’s Blade Battery technology, with all batteries covered by an eight year or 250,000 kilometre warranty, offering additional reassurance for buyers. With its blend of electric driving capability, strong efficiency and competitive pricing, the Sealion 5 represents another important step in BYD’s rapid growth in Ireland. As the brand continues to expand its dealer network and product range, it is becoming an increasingly familiar name for Irish buyers looking to make the switch to electrified driving.
