BMW has expanded its popular M2 range with the introduction of the first-ever all-wheel-drive M2, bringing M xDrive technology to the compact performance coupe for the first time. Long regarded as one of the purest driver’s cars in BMW’s line-up, the M2 has built its reputation on rear-wheel-drive thrills, compact dimensions and a powerful straight-six engine. Now, BMW believes the addition of its intelligent M xDrive system will broaden the car’s appeal by delivering even greater performance and year-round usability without sacrificing the engaging character that has made the M2 such a success. Powering the new model is BMW’s familiar 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six engine, producing 480hp. Combined with the M xDrive system and Active M Differential, power is distributed between the front and rear axles according to grip levels and driving conditions, while retaining a strong rear-wheel-drive bias. Under normal driving conditions, power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels, with the front axle only called upon when additional traction is required.

The result is even more impressive performance. The new M2 with M xDrive accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 3.7 seconds, making it three tenths of a second faster than the rear-wheel-drive version. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h, although opting for the M Driver’s Package raises that figure to 285km/h. Importantly for us driving enthusiasts, BMW has ensured that drivers can still tailor the car to their preferences. Through the M Setup menu, owners can adjust the characteristics of the all-wheel-drive system, while a dedicated 2WD mode allows the car to operate as a rear-wheel-drive machine when the stability control system is switched off. The new M2 also introduces BMW M Ignite technology, a new pre-chamber combustion system derived from motorsport. This innovation has been designed to improve efficiency under high loads while maintaining the sharp throttle response and linear power delivery that have become hallmarks of BMW M’s straight-six engines. BMW says the technology will also help future models comply with increasingly stringent emissions regulations.

Standard equipment includes an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear alloy wheels and M Compound brakes featuring six-piston front callipers. Customers seeking even greater track performance can also specify optional track tyres. Alongside the mechanical updates, BMW has expanded the colour palette available to M2 customers. For the first time, the striking BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue paint finish will be offered on the M2, joining a broad selection of metallic, solid and Individual paint options. The M2 has become one of BMW M’s biggest success stories in recent years, finishing as the brand’s best-selling high-performance model in 2025. Production of the new M2 with M xDrive will begin in August 2026 at BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico, with the Irish market launch scheduled for late summer.

Production of the new BMW M2 with M xDrive will begin in August 2026 at BMW’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico, with the Irish market launch scheduled for late summer. Pricing for the new all-wheel-drive M2 will start from €126,175 on the road, placing it firmly in premium sports car territory while offering buyers an even broader range of capabilities than the already highly acclaimed rear-wheel-drive model. By combining the performance and engagement that enthusiasts expect from an M car with the additional security and usability of all-wheel drive, BMW believes the new M2 with M xDrive offers the best of both worlds. For those seeking a compact performance coupe capable of delivering thrills in all conditions, it could prove to be the most complete M2 yet!
