We were fortunate enough to recently spend a week with the all new Kia EV5 which, was officially introduced the Irish market for 2026. Slotting into the highly competitive C-SUV segment, the EV5 represents Kia’s latest offering to bring electric power to Ireland’s most popular vehicle class. Developed on Kia’s dedicated E-GMP electric architecture, the EV5 is designed to balance everyday usability with modern electric performance and after just a few days testing, we found it does just that! Its styling takes a more SUV-focused approach, while the interior prioritises space, flexibility and comfort. Sitting into the drivers seat the EV5 feels like a a slightly shrunken EV9, with comfort-focused seating that includes heating, ventilation and a massage function for the driver on higher specifications. Sustainability also plays a role, with recycled and bio-based materials used throughout the interior.

Technology is a strong as with all Kia’s right now. At the heart of the dashboard is Kia’s newest connected car Navigation Cockpit, featuring a wide panoramic display made up of three integrated screens. Over-the-air updates ensure the vehicle can gain new features over time, while a three-zone climate system, digital key functionality and biometric access enhance convenience and security. Those of you that are safety conscious will be happy to see a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, including upgraded intelligent speed assist, advanced cruise control capable of stopping the vehicle if the driver becomes unresponsive, and hands-on highway driving assistance.

Power comes from an 81.4kWh battery paired with a 160kW electric motor, delivering a WLTP driving range of up to 530 kilometres. Efficiency is further supported by technologies such as advanced regenerative braking, a high-efficiency heat pump and rapid DC charging capability, allowing a 10 to 80 per cent charge in around 30 minutes under optimal conditions. The EV5 also supports bi-directional charging, allowing the vehicle to power external devices, and is pre-equipped for future vehicle-to-grid functionality as our infrastructure develops. During our test drive conditions were pretty cold and miserable as to be expected this time of the year but the range still held up pretty good even with heated seats and steering wheel on most days.

Driving through Dublin City, the EV5 feels comfortable and composed with one-pedal driving via the i-Pedal system that lets you accelerate and slow with just the accelerator, reducing brake use in stop-start traffic. Visibility is good, and the ride quality is tuned more for comfort than sharp handling so potholes and rough surfaces are dealt with without unsettling the car. Back out on the M7 wind and road noise are kept well under control and the EV5 stays stable and planted at motorway speeds. For us the EV5’s practicality credentials extend beyond range. It offers a towing capacity of up to 1,200kg, while a fully flat-folding rear seat layout creates a long, versatile load space approaching two metres in length. Thoughtful storage solutions throughout the cabin make the EV5 easy to live with in daily urban driving or tucking away necessities for outdoor weekend trips.

Irish punters can drop into any Kia dealership for a test drive right now! There are three trim levels to choose from that include  Earth 2, Earth 3 and GT-Line all equipped with the long-range battery as standard. Pricing starts at €47,625, with finance options available from €443 per month, positioning the EV5 as a strong new contender in Ireland’s rapidly expanding electric SUV market. We enjoyed our time with the new EV5 as much as the EV4 late last year. If this one fits your needs better, be sure to go see one in the metal.
