To coincide with Ireland’s Tyre Safety Day today, October 5, Continental Tyres Ireland has teamed up with content creator Michael Deady to encourage motorists to make regular tyre checks part of their driving routine. The campaign is particularly aimed at younger drivers and focuses on just how easy it is to identify potentially dangerous tyre wear or damage. Continental Tyres Ireland’s Tom Dennigan met Michael at a Modern Tyres outlet in Dublin, where they examined examples of tyres recently removed from vehicles that had been driving on Irish roads only a short time earlier. Some showed tread worn below Ireland’s legal minimum depth of 1.6mm, while others displayed significant cuts, bulges and other damage capable of increasing the risk of tyre failure. The examples feature in a new social media video demonstrating how easily tyre condition can deteriorate when regular inspections are overlooked.
“One of the most surprising things for people to see is the condition of some of the tyres that are removed from vehicles in tyre dealers across the country every day,” said Tom Dennigan, Head of Continental Tyres Ireland. “The reality is that many drivers simply don’t look at their tyres often enough.”
Continental says tyre checks don’t require specialist knowledge or equipment. A simple visual inspection every week or fortnight can help drivers spot excessive tread wear, cuts, bulges or other obvious damage, while tyre pressures should also be checked regularly. If anything looks unusual, or there are signs of uneven wear, motorists are advised to have the tyres professionally inspected. As the only physical contact between a vehicle and the road, tyre condition can have a major influence on braking, steering and overall vehicle safety. Correct pressures and regular inspections can also help prevent premature tyre wear, potentially extending tyre life as well as improving safety.
“We want to get away from the perception that tyre maintenance is something technical or something best left entirely to the experts,” added Dennigan. “Drivers can learn a lot from a simple walk around their vehicle. Check the tread, keep an eye out for any cuts or bulges, and make sure tyre pressures are correct.”
Continental has again chosen to work with a digital content creator to help bring its Tyre Safety Day message to a younger audience. The aim is to encourage new and younger motorists to develop good tyre habits early, making an inspection as routine as checking fuel levels or an EV’s state of charge. Michael Deady said many younger drivers take pride in looking after their cars but can easily overlook their tyres. “Working with Continental on this campaign was a great opportunity to show just how easy it is to carry out a quick inspection and spot some potential problems before they become more serious. If drivers start doing these checks early on in their driving lives, it becomes second nature.”
The tyre safety video is being shared through Continental Tyres Ireland’s social media channels today, reinforcing a simple Tyre Safety Day message: taking a few minutes to check your tyres regularly can help identify problems before they become a serious safety risk.
