The all-new Mazda CX-5 has added another major safety accolade to its growing list after earning the 2026 TOP SAFETY PICK+, the highest award presented by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the United States. The recognition follows maximum five-star ratings from both Euro NCAP in Europe and ANCAP in Australia and New Zealand, underlining the new CX-5’s strong safety performance across several major global markets.
In the latest IIHS assessment, the CX-5 achieved the required performance across key areas of crash protection and avoidance. Testing covered occupant protection in frontal and side impacts, along with technology designed to prevent collisions with other vehicles and pedestrians. Closer to home, the new CX-5 previously secured a five-star Euro NCAP rating, scoring 90 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection, 89 per cent for Child Occupant Protection, 93 per cent for Vulnerable Road Users and 83 per cent for Safety Assist.
Depending on specification, the European CX-5 is available with a comprehensive range of driver assistance technologies including Smart Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Driver Emergency Assist, Driver Monitoring, Lane Change Assist, Mazda Radar Cruise Control and Emergency Lane Keeping. The result also contributes to a strong year for Mazda in the US, where nine of its models received 2026 IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards. As of July 2026, that was more than any other automotive brand.
Mazda has now accumulated 100 TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards since 2008, with 2026 marking the third consecutive year in which the Japanese manufacturer has led the industry for the highest level of IIHS recognition.
