Importance of EU Tyre Label for Smarter Tyre Choice

Continental Tyres has partnered with content creator Erika Crawte to produce a new educational video aimed at raising awareness of tyre safety and helping motorists, particularly younger drivers, make more informed decisions when choosing tyres. As part of the collaboration, Tom Dennigan of Continental Tyres Ireland joins Erika at the Modern Tyres outlet on the Naas Road in Dublin to explain the EU Tyre Label and why it is an essential tool for motorists selecting the right tyre for their driving needs. In the video, Dennigan explains that the label provides clear, standardised information on fuel efficiency, wet grip performance and external noise levels, enabling motorists to easily compare tyres and choose the safest and most efficient option for their vehicle.

Highlighting the importance of the label, Dennigan said:

“When you look at the EU Tyre Label, you’re getting independent, reliable information on how a tyre performs in real world conditions. Whether it’s braking on wet roads, reducing fuel consumption or lowering road noise, the label empowers motorists to choose tyres that best match their priorities, whether that’s safety, sustainability or comfort.”

He also encouraged motorists to consult other trusted sources of information when researching tyres.

“In addition to the EU Tyre Label, independent tyre tests provide an unbiased picture of how different tyres perform, from braking and grip to fuel efficiency and longevity. These tests are widely available through automotive clubs, consumer magazines and motoring websites, helping drivers make safer and better value choices.”

Dennigan stressed that tyre choice is not just about performance, but also about safety.

“Tyres are the only point of contact between a vehicle and the road, and choosing a tyre with strong wet grip performance can significantly reduce stopping distances, particularly in Ireland’s frequently wet conditions,” he said.

He added that many motorists are unaware of the differences between tyre brands and models, and that the EU Tyre Label is designed to simplify the decision making process.

The video also serves as a reminder of the importance of regular tyre maintenance. Dennigan advises motorists to routinely check tyre pressure, tread depth and overall tyre condition, noting that underinflated or worn tyres can compromise safety and increase fuel consumption.

“Even the best rated tyre cannot perform properly if it is not maintained. A quick monthly check can make a huge difference to safety on the road.”

Dennigan concluded by reminding motorists that tyre retailers are legally required to provide EU Tyre Label information before a purchase is made.

“When buying a new tyre, retailers are obliged to show you the EU Tyre Label before purchase. If they do not, you should ask to see it.”
