BYD, one of the world’s largest new energy vehicle manufacturers, has strengthened its presence in Ireland with the arrival of the all-new BYD DOLPHIN SURF hatchback. Distributed locally by Motor Distributors Limited, the compact four-door EV has been launched with an eye-catching starting price of just €17,985, setting a new benchmark for affordability in the electric vehicle sector.
Internationally, the DOLPHIN SURF arrives with significant recognition, having been named “World Urban Car of the Year” at the 2025 World Car of the Year Awards, and recently achieving a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP. Designed to combine affordability, practicality, and eco-conscious driving, the model is available in three trim levels: Active, Boost, and Comfort, priced at €17,985, €22,230, and €24,113 respectively.
Built on BYD’s dedicated e-Platform 3.0 and powered by its cobalt-free Blade Battery technology, the DOLPHIN SURF offers efficiency without compromise. Battery capacities range from 30kWh (Active) to 43.2kWh (Boost) and 115kWh (Comfort), supporting acceleration from 0–100 km/h in 9.1 to 12.1 seconds. The model provides a WLTP range of 322 km, while rapid DC charging enables a 10–80% charge in around 30 minutes, making it well-suited to both daily urban commuting and longer trips.
Beyond affordability and range, the DOLPHIN SURF is designed with active lifestyles in mind. Its Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality allows the car’s battery to power external devices at up to 3.3kW, enabling on-the-go use of appliances such as coffee machines or electric grills. Standard technology and comfort features include BYD’s “Hi BYD” voice control system, NFC keyless entry via smartphone, and remote cabin pre-conditioning through the BYD app.
Inside, the DOLPHIN SURF emphasizes space and versatility. Vicky Reilly, BYD’s national sales manager, highlighted the brand’s rapid growth in Ireland, noting that BYD became the country’s top-selling EV marque in August 2025. Since launching locally just over two years ago, BYD’s range has expanded to six models, supported by a growing dealer network now standing at 11 outlets, with further expansions planned.
