AA Ireland’s latest monthly fuel price survey shows continued easing in petrol costs, offering a welcome break for motorists as we head into back-to-school season. Diesel prices have also reduced slightly. While ESB EV public charging rates rose in July, the cost of charging an EV at-home has remained unchanged this month.

  • Unleaded petrol now averages €1.70 per litre, down from €1.73 in July.
  • Diesel averages €1.68 per litre, down from €1.69 in July.
  • EV charging at-home costs remains steady.
  • EV charging on-the-go costs with ESB ecars remain at €0.66/kWh for high-powered chargers (≥150kW), following July’s increase. Those prices will likely rise again in October. Currently, public EV charging enjoys a reduced nine per cent VAT rate, but this is set to return to the standard 13.5 per cent VAT rate on October 31st this year.

A spokesperson for AA Ireland commented:

“August has brought some modest relief at the pumps, with both petrol and diesel recording a small decrease compared to July. While these reductions may seem minor, they help ease the cost burden for households and drivers travelling during the end of summer holiday period. Stability in EV charging costs this month is also welcome news for those who made the switch to electric, although the recent on-the-go price adjustments still highlight the importance of planning longer journeys carefully.”

AA Ireland continues to remind motorists that efficient driving habits can play an important role in keeping fuel bills down. Smooth acceleration, avoiding harsh braking and maintaining the correct tyre pressure. Motorists who want to optimise their vehicle’s performance can also book a check-up or service at any of AA Ireland’s Service Centres in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, or Newbridge. No membership is required — everyone is welcome!

Regular servicing not only boosts efficiency but can also prevent unexpected breakdowns.  Lastly, don’t forget to shop around for the best fuel prices as cheaper rates can be found around rural local towns as opposed to motorways and airports.
