As colder weather sets in, AA Ireland is urging motorists across the country to prioritise road safety by preparing their cars for the winter months. With darker evenings, wet conditions, and the possibility of frost and ice, ensuring that vehicles are winter-ready is essential to reducing the risk of breakdowns and accidents.
A spokesperson for AA Ireland said:
“Winter brings some of the most challenging driving conditions of the year. Taking a few simple steps now can make a big difference to keeping yourself, your passengers, and other road users safe.”
Top Tips from the AA for Winter Readiness:
- Check your tyres – The legal minimum tread depth in Ireland is 1.6mm, so inspect all four tyres regularly and replace them if they’re getting close to the limit. Worn or damaged tyres can significantly increase braking distances and reduce grip, especially in wet or icy conditions.
- Top up fluids – Make sure your windscreen washer fluid, coolant, and oil levels are sufficient, and consider using a winter-grade screen wash.
- Battery health – Cold weather puts extra strain on batteries. If your battery is more than three years old, have it tested.
- Lights and visibility – Check that all lights are working properly, clean your windscreen inside and out, and keep de-icer and an ice scraper in your car.
- Emergency kit – Carry essentials such as a high-vis vest, torch, blanket, water, and phone charger in case of a breakdown.
AA Ireland is also reminding drivers to adjust their driving style during the winter months by reducing speed, leaving extra space between vehicles, and allowing additional time for journeys.
“Slowing down and being prepared can be the difference between a safe journey and a dangerous situation, we want to remind all motorists that a little preparation goes a long way.”
