Opel is bringing some serious performance back to the Corsa range with the arrival of the new all-electric Corsa GSE, and the good news is that it has already been confirmed for Ireland which, has many GSE and GSI fans. Following the recent launch of the Mokka GSE, the new Corsa becomes the latest model to revive Opel’s performance-focused GSE badge, which now stands for Grand Sport Electric. The new hot hatch will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October before arriving in Ireland later this year. For those who remember Opel’s performance cars of the past, there’s plenty of history behind the idea. The original Corsa A GSi became a popular small performance car during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and Opel is hoping to recapture some of that character for the electric era.
The numbers certainly suggest this isn’t simply a Corsa with some sporty trim. The new Corsa GSE produces 207kW, equivalent to 281hp, along with 345Nm of torque. That’s the same power output as the larger Mokka GSE and enough to send the Corsa from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.5 seconds. Power comes from a 54kWh lithium-ion battery, of which 51kWh is usable, while drivers can choose between Eco, Normal and Sport driving modes. Sport unlocks the full 281hp and the car’s most aggressive calibration, while Normal reduces output to 231hp and allows a top speed of 180km/h. Eco prioritises efficiency and limits top speed to 150km/h.
Importantly, Opel has done considerably more than simply add power. The front-wheel-drive Corsa GSE features a Torsen multi-plate limited-slip differential together with a lowered sports chassis, specially developed axles, stabilisers and hydraulic shock absorbers. Steering and pedal response have also been recalibrated, while four-piston performance brakes provide the additional stopping power required. Visually, the GSE receives a suitably more purposeful appearance. It rides on 18-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, with Alcon brake calipers carrying GSE lettering visible behind them. A unique front apron, wider-looking wheel arches, black lower trim, black roof and rear spoiler further distinguish it from the standard Corsa range.
The performance theme continues inside with Alcantara-trimmed sports seats featuring integrated head restraints and a distinctive black, grey and yellow chequered design. Yellow seatbelts and stitching add further contrast, while an Alcantara steering wheel and aluminium sports pedals complete the hot hatch treatment. A 10-inch central touchscreen is joined by a digital driver’s display featuring additional GSE information including G-force, acceleration and battery data. Heated seats, a heated steering wheel, 180-degree reversing camera and keyless entry and start are also included. Interestingly, the Corsa GSE also features Vehicle-to-Load functionality, allowing energy stored in the traction battery to power external electrical equipment such as an e-bike or other suitable devices.
The arrival of the Corsa GSE represents an interesting return to the traditional small hot hatch formula, albeit with a very modern electric twist. With 281hp, a limited-slip differential and a properly developed performance chassis packed into the familiar Corsa footprint, it could prove to be one of the more entertaining electric cars to arrive on the Irish market.
