McLaren Automotive has revealed the new McL 6GT at Monterey Car Week, a striking new supercar inspired by Bruce McLaren’s original M6GT and one that points towards an exclusive new direction for the British manufacturer. More than simply a concept, McLaren has confirmed that a production version of the McL 6GT will arrive in 2028, sitting beyond its existing core model range. The big news for enthusiasts is its focus on analogue driver involvement. The McL 6GT combines lightweight carbon fibre construction with V8 internal combustion power, rear-wheel drive and a manual transmission. It will be the first McLaren since the legendary F1 to feature an authentic manual gearbox.
Hydraulic steering, physical switchgear and machined aluminium controls further emphasise the car’s deliberately mechanical character. Even the gear lever has received special attention, incorporating McLaren’s historic Speedy Kiwi emblem.
“The McLaren McL 6GT imagines what our inspirational founder had wished to complete but with six additional decades of innovation and passion woven through every element, creating a modern icon of driver connection,” said McLaren Automotive CEO Nick Collins.
Visually, the McL 6GT draws heavily on the M6GT and the M6A Can-Am racer on which it was based. Its exceptionally low and wide stance is complemented by a low nose, flowing bodywork and distinctive Kammback rear. References to McLaren’s history are found throughout, including a modern interpretation of the M6GT’s original taillights, Bruce McLaren’s signature in the engine bay and further Speedy Kiwi detailing.
Underneath, McLaren’s latest lightweight carbon fibre monocoque technology is combined with carbon fibre bodywork, continuing a philosophy that has been central to the company’s road and racing cars for decades. With a V8 engine, manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive and hydraulic steering wrapped in a lightweight carbon fibre package, the McL 6GT looks set to be one of McLaren’s most driver-focused road cars yet when the production version arrives in 2028.
