At the Irish launch of the Hyundai IONIQ 9 at the prestigious K Club, the all-new electric SUV made a compelling entrance into the market. Hyundai’s latest addition to its electric lineup is a full-sized, three-row SUV offering a fresh and premium option for families and EV enthusiasts alike. During the launch, the vehicle was put through its paces on the scenic backroads of County Kildare, showcasing its road manners, electric performance, and premium features in real-world conditions.
The IONIQ 9 is designed with the modern user in mind, those who value connectivity, spaciousness, and a sense of calm and refinement. Its cabin layout, designed to accommodate up to seven passengers, is expansive and filled with thoughtful touches. The interior focuses on delivering a lounge-like ambiance, blending elliptical design elements and natural lighting via a panoramic sunroof. The flat floor architecture allows for flexible seating configurations, while first- and second-row Relaxation Seats can recline and extend leg rests, offering comfort even during charging stops.
A key innovation is Hyundai’s Dynamic Body Care massage system built into the Relaxation Seats. Using subtle pressure and vibration, it enhances comfort on long journeys. The vehicle also includes swiveling second-row seats that can face the third row, encouraging a more social and interactive cabin environment when parked. In addition to comfort, the SUV provides practicality, including a sliding Universal Island 2.0 centre console with ample storage and accessibility from the second row.
Cargo space is generous, with up to 1,323 litres available when the third row is folded and 620 litres with all three rows upright. Even the front trunk offers storage, with capacities of 88 litres in rear-wheel-drive variants and 52 litres in all-wheel-drive versions. Sustainability also plays a strong role, with Hyundai incorporating a range of eco-conscious materials such as recycled fabrics, bio paints, and eco-processed leathers.
Design-wise, the IONIQ 9 adopts what Hyundai calls an ‘Aerosthetic’ approach, blending aerodynamic efficiency with elegant, futuristic styling. It features a curved roofline and pixel-style LED lighting at the front and rear. A drag coefficient of just 0.259, digital side mirrors, an active air flap system, and a 3D underbody cover all contribute to efficient airflow. The SUV rides on a long 3,130 mm wheelbase, giving it a commanding presence and roomy interior.
At the rear, the design echoes the smooth curves of a boat tail, continuing the sleek, minimalist philosophy. Hyundai has eliminated the traditional roof antenna in favor of integrated functionality, improving both aesthetics and aerodynamics. Exterior lighting includes signature pixel projection headlights and intelligent high beam systems. Customers can choose from 16 exterior colours and a wide range of alloy wheel options up to 21 inches.
Underpinning the IONIQ 9 is Hyundai’s E-GMP architecture, updated for improved performance and driving dynamics. It supports a high-capacity, 110.3 kWh battery delivering up to 620 km of WLTP-estimated range in the Long-Range rear-wheel-drive version. Charging is enabled by Hyundai’s multi-charging system supporting both 400V and 800V infrastructures, and the vehicle-to-load (V2L) feature allows users to power devices directly from the car.
Powertrain options include a 160 kW motor in the RWD version, a dual-motor setup in the Long-Range AWD with 160 kW and 70 kW motors, and a high-performance dual 160 kW motor configuration. Acceleration times range from 9.4 seconds in the RWD to just 5.2 seconds in the Performance AWD model. The IONIQ 9 also includes a refined chassis, active noise control, and a terrain management system, all of which contribute to a serene and confident drive.
Inside the cabin, Hyundai has introduced several innovations, including the AI-enabled Hyundai Assistant and Features on Demand, allowing users to purchase upgrades like ambient lighting animations or streaming services. The infotainment system includes dual 12-inch screens and optional BOSE surround sound. Safety features are comprehensive, with ten airbags, reinforced body structure, and Hyundai’s latest suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including lane assist, collision avoidance, and blind-spot monitoring.
A notable highlight is the UV-C steriliser within the vehicle, which can disinfect small items like phones and masks. Charging ports throughout the vehicle are 100W USB-C and powered directly by the high-voltage battery for uninterrupted use. The climate control system is also smartly engineered, with separate zones and rear-specific functions ideal for long road trips or camping.
With a focus on technology, comfort, safety, and sustainability, the Hyundai IONIQ 9 represents a significant leap forward in electric mobility. Priced from €78,495 in Elegance trim, it is positioned to appeal to premium EV buyers looking for an all-electric family SUV that combines practicality, advanced features, and a refined driving experience.
