Double award from Euro NCAP: with a Platinum rating for the ID. Buzz Cargo and Gold for the Caddy Cargo, two vehicles from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles have impressed the Euro NCAP safety and test engineers. The ID. Buzz Cargo achieved one of the highest Euro NCAP ratings ever recorded for a commercial vehicle, thanks to its assistance systems that keep the electric vehicle in its lane, dynamically adapt the vehicle speed and stop it in good time in front of stationary obstacles or crossing pedestrians and cyclists. The Caddy Cargo impressed the test engineers when it came to staying in lane and emergency braking.

The ID. Buzz Cargo delivers in many ways: not only goods and services for its users, but also in terms of safety. During Euro NCAP’s rigorous testing, the ID. Buzz Cargo produced some compelling results. For example, it excelled in braking tests in front of stationary and moving obstacles such as stationary or slow-moving vehicles, as well as pedestrians or cyclists approaching from the side, even in the dark. The electric delivery van’s lane-keeping capabilities and its occupant monitoring system were also singled out for praise. The ID. Buzz Cargo has a Blind Spot Assist system on board. Thanks to its camera system and digital mapping, the vehicle reacts to oncoming traffic when turning and dynamically adapts its speed in line with local speed limits. The ID. Buzz Cargo impressed with a score of 83 per cent in the Safety Assist category thanks to its camera and radar systems. The final verdict was a resounding Platinum for commercial vehicle safety.

The Caddy Cargo from VWCV also impressed, achieving good results in the tests thanks to its on-board assist systems for emergency braking in front of obstacles, such as stationary or slow-moving traffic as well as pedestrians and cyclists. It performed particularly well with its ability to return to its lane unaided. Overall, the test engineers at Euro NCAP deemed this worthy of a performance rating of 68 per cent in the Safety Assist category and a Gold award in the overall rating for 2024.

Paul Hunt, Director of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland, said both Euro NCAP results demonstrate that safety in commercial vehicles can be improved through the increased use of assist systems.

He said: “Safety is one area that is very often an afterthought when it comes to buying a commercial vehicle. However, statistics prove that people who use their vehicles for work are more likely to be involved in an accident. Safety should always be of paramount importance and, for us, that means making no compromises. The ID. Buzz Cargo and Caddy are two of the safest vehicles in their class because they come equipped with state-of-the-art technology normally reserved for the premium end of the retail car market. At Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, we make no distinction between the safety of families and the safety of people who use their vehicles for work. It’s a philosophy that has helped us achieve such impressive Euro NCAP scores. I would urge more commercial buyers to consider safety as an important part of the overall package when it comes to choosing their next vehicle.”
